NLH - Nantwich Local History

Group Description :

This group investigates the history of Nantwich through doing research, listening to talks delivered by group members, participating in group discussions, sharing memories and making occasional group visits to places of interest which tie in with our studies.

For over 14 years the group has been looking at the history of Nantwich chronologically from pre-historic times onward and is now studying the history of the town in the first half of the 20th century.

Inevitably for the early 20th century period this included considering the effects of World War 1 on the town. However, in addition we also looked at subjects such as the introduction of cinemas and other entertainment venues in the town, the changes in shops and main sources of employment in the town, the history of the railway lines that ran though Nantwich (including the Market Drayton line), the changing fortunes of the town`s main sporting clubs and the histories of the different schools. Over the past year we also took detailed looks at a selection of the streets in Nantwich using a 1913 directory listing of residents street-by-street as our starting point. We are currently looking at how World War 2 impacted on the town and looking at a selection of the villages within a 5 mile radius of Nantwich. Over the next year we are also likely to take a look at how Nantwich reacted to cultural changes in the 1950s and 1960s. We will also occasionally look at aspects of Crewe's history as well as national events and trends during the same period. Our agenda of future talks is set by the members as we are always reliant on members of the group making suggestions of subjects that they would like to study and on which they would be happy to research and give talks.

Our studies will give us the chance to consider how the experience of living in Nantwich and South Cheshire changed for its residents during the 20th century.

The group is one that is always very pleased to welcome new members - whether they are residents of Nantwich or just persons who are interested to find out more about the town's history.
